Bear with me (January 14, 2005 - 5:37 p.m.)
There was a case I the news the other day about an employee of Waterstones (it’s a bookshop) in Edinburgh who was sacked because his employers found out about his weblog. The only thing he appears have done that could have upset them was slag off his manager.
Yesterday, at lunch, I overheard our office computer security man talking about restricting internet access…and then having a joke about whether people writing in weblogs really constitutes working in office time.
Which kind of suggests he knows people are doing it…or maybe just me.
I do check the IP addresses that appear in my stats wherever possible, but given the content of this diary you will understand why I’m a bit nervous again about writing from the office computer. There’s little point in spotting that they’ve been reading me after the event – by then the damage will have been done.
I’m going to put out feelers and discover whether there is any kind of search that identifies web-use in this office. I doubt this is something I would lose my job over – but I certainly don’t want this read by anyone here.
So bear with me – Simon will be at University from tomorrow and I’ll be able to write from home.
